The assembly of the Romanian-Turkish relations, with emphasis on boosting economic relations, joint energy projects, cooperation in the Black Sea region and Turkey's European journey are some of the main topics discussed by Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu on an official visit to Ankara, November 19-20.

"The only way forward of the relationship between Romania and Turkey, which is excellent, is to continue development," the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) quotes Comanescu as saying in a press release issued on Friday (Nov 21).
The visit was part of the events devoted to celebrate 130 years of diplomatic ties between Romania and Turkey.

Minister Comanescu was welcomed by Turkey's President Abdullah Gul and Chairman of the Grand National Assembly Koksal Toptan, and met his Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan. The minister also attended a business lunch extended by the Union of Turkish Chambers of Commerce and Stock Exchanges (TOBB).

Both parties are said to have voiced mutual interest in the continual development of commercial exchanges and mutual investment, while also agreeing on seeking cooperation opportunities on third markets, particularly in Central Asia, Southern Caucasus, the Middle East and Africa. Part of the visit was the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Chambers of commerce and industry of Romania and Turkey.

Comanescu highlighted Romania's firm support for Turkey's accession to the European Union (EU) and Romania's readiness to share its own experiences with preparing for EU membership.
According to the MAE, Ministers Comanescu and Babacan reiterated the firm support of the two countries for the carrying out of the Nabucco oil pipeline project and the construction of an underwater cable from Constanta to Istanbul for electricity transmission.

Romania and Turkey will continue regional cooperation, particularly in the Black Sea region, within the Black Sea Synergy project, the Black Sea Economic Organisation and other regional formats, such as the South-East Europe Cooperation Project.

During the visit, the two foreign ministers opened a joint exhibition of diplomatic documents marking 130 years of diplomatic ties between Turkey and Romania. Comanescu laid a wreath at the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The official visit to Ankara closed a diplomatic tour of Comanescu to the South Caucasus, Central Asia and Turkey, which main important component was boosting Romania's economic presence in the visited countries and promoting energy projects of strategic interest.
