Ursus Breweries, 24% hike in sales volume

Beer producer Ursus Breweries, part of SABMiller Group, posted in the first half of the current financial year (April-September) a 24% growth in its sales volume compared to the same period of last year, a four-fold higher pace as against the domestic market and twice as much from the European one.
 
“On a market with a pronounced slowed down growth pace, we concluded the first half of the year with a four-fold higher growth than the market’s”, announced Ursus Breweries CEO Stephan Maria Weber.
Ursus Breweries accounts for a share of 26.3% on the profile market, according to the company, quoting studies conducted by MEMRB research firm, data valid at the end of September.
 
According to the company representatives, all brands in Ursus Breweries portfolio recorded remarkable performances in the first six months of the current financial year. As such, Timisoreana continued to enjoy the highest growth pace in volume on the mainstream segment (31%), consolidating its leading position on the beer market.
 
At company level, the biggest advance was recorded by Peroni brand, with twice as much sales and an expanded distribution. As well, Ciucas showed the highest growth on the economy segment (19%) and the new Stejar Pilsner also surged by 32%, exceeding by far the previous brand – Strong – sales. On the premium segment, Ursus showed a strong evolution, above the beer market average.
 
At European level, Ursus Breweries continued to be one of SABMiller’s growth engines, which posted in the first half of the current financial year, in Europe, a total advance in volumes of 10 percent and an organic growth of 2%. During the financial year concluded on March 31, 2008, the group reported revenues of 21.41 billion dollars. SABMiller is floated on London and Johannesburg stock exchanges.
 
The beer market in Romania reached 19.5 million hectoliters in 2007, this year estimations indicating a 5% rise in sales volume, to 20.5 million hectoliters. Main Ursus competitors are Heineken Romania, InBev Romania and United Romanian Breweries Bereprod. Ursus holds four breweries, in Cluj-Napoca (center), Timisoara (west), Buzau (south) and Brasov (center), having more than 1,500 employees.
Beer consumption per capita in Romania stood last year at 89 liters as against 160 liters in the Czech Republic and for this year an average level of 95 liters per capita is expected, according to data provided by Romania’s Breweries Association.
