EP amendment favors employment of Romanian workers against extra-Community workers

The European Parliament on November 20 adopted an amendment to the Report on the legal migration of extra-Community highly skilled workers that favours employment of Romanian workers.
The amendment passed by the plenary session in Strasbourg of the European Parliament provides for priority to the employment of Romanian workers against extra-Community workers, which is said to be all the more important as there are still restrictions in place in some European Union member states concerning the employment of Romanian nationals.

“Given that there are still restrictions in place on Romanian and Bulgarian workers on the labour markets of many EU member states, which may be prolonged amidst the ongoing economic crisis, I believe it is natural that Romanians are not treated as some second-class citizens and left even behind extra-Community workers. Moreover, this is about observing the principle of community preference enshrined in the accession treaties of 2003, and 2005, respectively,” says Romanian MEP Renate Weber.

“The European Parliament, through its vote of today, expresses the wish of the MEPs to provide fair treatment to European citizens, irrespective of the member state that is their home state. We are also appreciating the excellent cooperation among all the Romanian MEPs, irrespective of their political membership, to support and vote in favor of this amendment,” the Romanian MEP group affiliated with the ALDE Group in the European Parliament says in a press statement.
