Romania has been accepted to join the 2008-2009 edition of the “European Destinations of Excellence” project, reads a press release issued by the Romanian Travel Department.
This week, the European Commission has informed the Travel Department of the Romanian Ministry for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), Commerce, Tourism and liberal Trades (MIMMCTPL) that Romania’s candidacy was accepted for the 2008-2009 edition of the “European Destinations of Excellence” project.
“This year’s theme of the project contest is tourism and protected areas. This year’s project is aimed at protected areas and the neighbouring areas where a viable tourist product has been developed thanks to their status of protected areas by protecting the environment and meeting the needs of the locals and tourists,” says state secretary Lucia Morariu.
The ministry is expected to come up with specific standards to assess the destinations to run in the competition, which include being a non-traditional tourist area; the applicants have to be declared protected areas by the national legislation and carry out their tourist business in a way that secure social and cultural development as well as partnerships between the authorities concerned with protected areas and tourist operators.
“After the standards have been worked out, the project promotion stage will follow to make sure the information reaches all the potential candidates. The entire selection procedure has to close by May 2009, and the winner will be known in June 2009,” said Morariu.
There are currently three categories of protected areas in Romania: the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, 13 national parks and 13 natural reserves.
