Under an emergency ordinance approved in the government’s December 4 sitting, the pollution tax for all cars being registered for the first time in Romania shall rise three times.
The government’s spokesperson Camelia Spataru said that this measure is a key lever whereby the government supports the auto industry hurt by the economic crisis.
“Under an emergency ordinance, the government decided to rise the pollution tax for all vehicles that are being registered for the first time in Romania. The ordinance spells out anew the measure already adopted by the government for Euro 4-compliant cars, specifically a tax break for all new cars registered in Romania and the other EU member states after Dec. 15, 2008,” said Camelia Spataru.
Almost two weeks ago, the government decided that Euro 4-compliant cars with a displacement of up to 2,000 cmc shall be subject to a one-year tax suspension.
The normative act will be sent to the Official Gazette as soon as it gets the European Commission’s approval.
The government had announced the suspension of the tax starting Dec. 1, 2008, but the ordinance was not yet published in the Official Gazette because the response of the EC is still pending.
The ordinance will most probably come into effect after Dec. 15.
