Minister of Administration and the Interior Dan Nica informed on Sunday, after the videoconference with the chiefs of county police inspectorates and the chiefs of the Romanian Police, that there would be an increase in the number of policemen and gendarmes ensuring public order and safety nationwide. "There will be an increase in the number of policemen and gendarmes that will ensure order and safety nationwide: about 20,000 policemen will be added to the 6,000 gendarmes that are in the streets every day.

I have made the decision that overqualified policemen should be added to them, people who are very familiar with the work of policemen and gendarmes. Thus, 30 percent of the persons working with the Ministry of Administration and the Interior (MAI) will be transferred to operative work, namely they will be re-allotted to the order and safety component and also to combating economic and financial crimes and organized crime, but also to the criminal research component. This will happen by Wednesday [February 18]," said Minister Nica.

Dan Nica also informed that, during the videoconference, he had asked for a better communication of the actions taken by MAI and said that the absence of spokespersons made the actions impossible to communicate "in an appropriate way and their transparence not to exist," specifying in this respect that it would be corrected in the time to come.

He insisted on warning against the fact that it was not the duty of the police and gendarmerie to deal with the protection of the banks and the currency exchange offices and asked these institutions to observe the laws in force, also informing that checks will be made and sanctions will be given to the people breaking the law.

At the same time the Minister of Administration and the Interior informed that procedures would start in order to add 2,000 policemen to the Romanian Police. They will be added to another more than 1,000 this year's graduates and the ones that were transferred from the border police as a consequence of the slowdown of certain activities.
