Prizes for Romanians at Film Festival in Berlin
19 februarie 2009
The Romanians present at the 59th edition of the International Film Festival in Berlin, (Feb 5-15), have won a prize for direction, and a Silver Bear, for sound design, as well as some distinctions for „Storm”, featuring Anamaria Marinca, in the main role, write on Monday, dailies Cotidianul and Romania Libera. The first distinction awarded to a Romanian at Berlinale went to film director Radu Jude. His picture, „The happiest girl in the world” has won the prize of the Confederation Internationale des Cinemas d'Art et d'Essai.
The Romanian-British-Hungarian co-production „Katalin Varga”, by Peter Strickland, has received the Silver Bear for the sound track. The film „The happiest girl in the world”, by Radu Jude, present in the „Forum” section, has succeeded to win the film distributors. The jury has said that „this charming film tells the story of a typical family in Romania who travels from the countryside to Bucharest to accept a prize (…)
The strong point of the film is its being amusing, while staying faithful to its lofty artistic ideals.” Actress Andreea Bosneag, at her debut, has been presented in Berlin, along with Radu Jude, Ada Solomon – the producer, Catalin Cristutiu – the film editor, and Augustina Stanciu – co-scriptwriter, along with Radu Jude. The Silver Bear for an „Exceptional artistic contribution” has gone to Gabor Erdely and Tamas Szekely, in charge of the sound track of the co-production of Peter Stickland.
„Katalin Varga”, having production house Libra Film as the majority partner, has vied for the Golden Bear. „I am very happy for having had the intuition of the discovery of an exceptional debut film, and I am sure we will cooperate with Peter Strickland for future projects, too,” said the Romanian producer of the film, Oana Giurgiu.
The international criticism has appreciated the length-film debut of director Peter Strickland, considering it, according to critic Shane Danielsen, from the indiewire.com site, by far, the best film in the Berlinale 2009. „Storm”, by Hans-Chrstian Schmid, featuring Anamaria Marinca, has received three awards, from Guild Art House Cinemas, Amnesty International, and the readers of „Berliner Morgenpost.”
