Eurostat: Romania’s commercial deficit amounts to 21 bln euros in first 11 months of last year

Romania's commercial deficit rose in the first 11 months of 2008 to 21 billion euros from a negative balance of 19.5 billion euros over the similar period in 2007, according to the figures released on Tuesday by the European Statistics Office (Eurostat). Whereas the overall exports showed a 16% increase, to 31.7 billion euros over January – November 2008, from 27.3 billion euros in the first 11 months of 2007, imports advances by 13%, to 52.7 billion euros over January – November 2008 compared to 46.8 billion euros in the similar period of 2007.
In the first 11 months of last year, among EU member states Germany registered the highest commercial surplus (168.2 billion euros), followed by The Netherlands (38 billion euros) and Ireland (25.6 billion euros). In exchange Great Britain recorded the highest commercial deficit amid EU-27 (111.7 billion euros), followed by Spain (84.2 billion euros), France (64.2 billion euros), Greece (33.2 billion euros), Poland (22.3 billion euros), Portugal (21.2 billion euros) and Romania (21 billion euros).
According to Eurostat, the commercial balance of the euro zone (EA15) registered in December 2008 a smaller deficit than the analysts expected, of just 700 million euros from a deficit of 3.9 billion euros in December 2007 and a revised deficit of 5.8 billion euros in November 2008. 2008 annualized, the euro zone posted a record commercial deficit of 32.1 billion euros compared to a surplus of 15.8 billion euros in 2007. EA15 exports rose 4% last year whereas imports advanced 7%. The EU posted in 2008 a commercial deficit of 241.3 billion euros compared to a deficit of 192.4 billion euros in 2007. EU27 exports rose 5% last year, whereas imports advanced 8%.
According to centralized data of the National Statistics Institute (INS), Romania's FOB-CIF commercial deficit climbed in 2008 to 22.52 billion euros (82.65 billion lei), by approximately 747.8 million euros higher than in 2007. FOB exports in 2008 stood at 33.61 billion euros (123.39 billion lei) and CIF imports at 56.134 billion euros (206.05 billion lei).
