Information in English

Romanian europarliamentarians Daciana Sarbu and Corina Cretu (Social Democratic Party, PSD, in the ruling coalition), protest through an open letter addressed to Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi and Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni against the new wave of discriminatory accusations made by Italian politicians targeting the Romanians living in Italy.

„Over the past days Romanians were once again in the focus of attention. Unfortunately, we do not refer to the work and creativity through which Adrian Mutu reached a good score for the soccer team of Florence. We refer to simple Romanians who are working in the Italian restaurants, shops or houses doing their duty with responsibility and devotion, which are nowhere mentioned, despite their contribution of over 1% to Italy's gross domestic product (GDP) and still, they exist, they make your life easier and we make us proud.

In turn, Romanian thieves and rapists have been in the focus of attention lately. People talked so much about them that the remainder of Europe might think Romanian is a synonym for „perpetrator”. Your media writes about concerning cases, strongly emphasizing the word „Romanian”; journalists do their duty of informing even if, presenting the case of a Romanian, they do dot refer also to the hundreds of similar cases, in which Italian citizens or any other nationality are involved.

What frightens us, however, is the insistence with which voices of your political stage continue to present Romania as a source of perpetrations and Romanians – as a nation made up exclusively of offenders and perpetrators,” reads the letter Romanian MEPs Daciana Sarbu and Corina Cretu addressed the Italian officials. Stressing that it is not normal the equal mark should be put between „offence” and „Romania”, the two Romanian europarliamentarians call on Berlusconi and Maroni to convince their colleagues of the Italian administration to give up these slippages from the democratic norms and the European conduct.

„If we should punish something let's punish crimes, not the nationality. The only weapon, which we have to use against offences, is the law. Thieves, rapists and perpetrators are not Romanians: they are malefactors and have to be punished for the evil they made. They alone should be punished not an entire nation which consider you friends,” reads the letter.
