The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) might partially or totally annul some loans granted to Romania, which have a dissatisfactory implementation degree. The international financial institution is going to identify the possibility to reallocate the respective amounts through available instruments, following a joint analysis in the immediately following period with the Ministry of Public Finance (MFP) and the World Bank (WB), MFP informs in a release.

Romanian Finance Minister Gheorghe Pogea had a working meeting on Thursday with Orsalia Kalantzopoulos, director for Central, Central-South European and Baltic States with WB. Talks agenda included an analysis of the current portfolio and the establishment, on joint accord, of the working means for the outlining of the Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) from 2009 throughout 2011.

"Referring to the situation of loans under way, in the current economic and financial context, the sides underlined the importance of optimizing IBRD portfolio for Romania, advancing the idea of restructuring some of the existing loans which have an unsatisfactory project implementation degree. Restructuring has in view a partial or even total cancellation of some loans with dissatisfactory implementation degree, going to identify the possibility to reallocate the respective amounts through the instruments made available by the bank, based on a joint analysis conducted in the upcoming period by MFP and WB", MFP stressed in its release.

"The World Bank had been a steady partner for Romania in its process of transition and accession to the European Union (EU). We appreciate this permanent help, as well as WB wish to redefine the partnership with Romania, in its new position as EU member state. MFP sustains the implementation of IBRD financed projects. I thank the bank's team for cooperating with our experts in the identification of the problems and of the solutions to be included in the Joint Portfolio Review and I assure you that I am ready for dialogue", stated Minister Gheorghe Pogea.

Within discussions on the sidelines of the Country Partnership Strategy for the period 2009-2011, both sides accepted the idea of a dialogue aimed at the adoption, on joint accord, of the most adequate variant for further cooperation.
