PSD President Mircea Geoana: We face fierce competition for jobs
21 februarie 2009
President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, at rule), Mircea Geoana, stated on Friday morning, at the end of the meeting with general manager of Nokia factory in Jucu (Cluj County, center-west) John Guerry, that it is crucial for Romania to help the big transnational companies, given that at present Romania is facing a "fierce" competition for jobs. "It is very important Romania remains attractive for this transnational companies.
It is essential we can grant the needed support to those from Nokia as for the express way linking Jibou to Cluj, to provide those at Ford the express way linking Craiova to Pitesti (south), in general to create the needed conditions for keeping the work places. (…) At present we are in a fierce competition with other European and world countries because these transnational companies, such as Ford, Nokia, Renault and other big ones present in Romania, are cutting their activities globally", said PSD President.
The Social-Democrat leader added that Nokia representatives are interested in the infrastructure aspect, as well as in some other support means for the professional training of the labor force and underlined that the aid provided to big companies represent an essential part of the plan to keep the jobs in Romania.
"Nokia produces in Romania more than 20 million mobile phone units per year, it is a firm with more than 1,600 staff in its actual configuration and which, under conditions in which a stimulus package for the construction of infrastructure in the zone is implemented it could generate more than 3,500 new jobs. This meeting is part of a series I, and other Government and coalition representatives, have had with the strategic companies in Romania.
After the budget passes – and I think that this much disputed and much discussed budget will be approved by the Parliament – we should examine the way Romania's Government and, in general, public authorities help these strategic investors. Jobs depend on them, as well as the attractiveness for other foreign investments in Romania and, therefore, as in the case of other economic plans of keeping and boosting the number of jobs, we must find means to aid these strategic enterprises for the Romanian economy", underlined Mircea Geoana.
