Local wine growers are optimistic as for the evolution of the profile market and estimate a sales growth of 10 percent this year, Capital weekly reports. "In 2009 we wish to consolidate the upward trend in the last years and we estimate a 10 pc growth. However the big shelve battle will be carried out around prices and there is the likelihood that the mass wine consumption will significantly grow, more than the consumption of quality wine", said Ovidiu Gheorghe, director of the National Vineyard Growers and Wine Producers Association (PNVV).

As regards consumption habits, Daniel Negrescu, Murfatlar brand manager, said that consumer's preference is for white wines in a proportion of 70 percent and a growing tendency of semi-dry wine on the premium segment and of the dry on super premium segment are obvious. "Traditionalist in consumption, Romanians prefer local wines, which account for 97 percent of the total domestic market", completes Ovidiu Gheorghe the Romanian consumer's image.

In her turn, Irina Misu, account manager with research firm MEMRB Romania, appreciates that the local wine market is mature, noting that the market segments volume tend to stay the same year-on-year. "Vintage wines represented an exception, which over Dec. 2006 – Nov. 2007 accounted for less than 50 percent of the category volume and, over Dec. 2007 – Nov. 2008, for 52.1 percent. From the value point of view vintage wines market share stood at 79 percent during both examined periods", stressed MEMRB representative.

According to MEMRB data, over Dec. 2007 – Nov. 2008, Murfatlar vineyards imposed the tendency on the local market, accounting for 15.6 percent in volume and 20.7 percent in value. " Yet the last part of 2008 was different compared to the previous years: the stocks on the market declined and portfolios were restructured. Due to uncertainty and difficult funding, several entities in the distribution chain ceased to stock merchandise and decided to restructure their portfolio, so that to keep just sale prone brands", said Murfatlar brand manager.

On the other hand, compared to the previous year, when two-liter bottles accounted for 39.2 percent in volume, over Dec. 2007 – Nov. 2008 they lost 3.3 percentage points in favor of 0.75 l. and 1.5 l. bottles. As a result glass bottled wines advanced as against those in plastic. Although not a market as large as the French, Italian, German or British, Romania ranks first among the Eastern European countries. Last year, the value of local wine market was estimated at some 500 million euros, approximately 17 percent more than the previous year, the weekly also reports.
