Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, in the ruling coalition) Mircea Geoana on Monday deemed unacceptable what he said are xenophobe and racist approaches of some Italian politicians in relation to the Romanian community in Italy taken as a whole. He underlined on Monday there currently reappeared the trend in which some political leaders from Italy incriminate the Romanian community in Italy as a whole.

„Such xenophobe and racist approaches in relation to the Romanian community in Italy are unacceptable. We need to condemn more severely the cases of violence and crime some of the Romanian citizens commit in Italy. Nevertheless, it is obvious that, amidst the current economic crisis, there have reappeared the trend in which certain political leaders from Italy incriminate the Romanian community in their country as a whole.

The Romanian state authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs included, need to respond to such situations and present how things really are instead,” the PSD leader Mircea Geoana said at the end of a meeting of the PSD National Standing Bureau. The Social-Democrat leader also underlined the necessity for a European approach to the situation of the Romanian citizens in Italy.
