Justice Minister Predoiu: Changing the legal framework of Romanian-Italian ties, unnecessary

23 februarie 2009

Information in English

Romanian Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu on Monday told a press conference that changing the legal framework of the bilateral cooperation between Romania and Italy was unnecessary. „The Romanian-Italian legal cooperation works the same as usual. Please notice that the Italian Justice Minister has not criticized or made any complains as regards this cooperation. The only negative statement on this matter came exclusively from the political area.

The Romanian and Italian justice ministers agreed on and stated in October 2008 in Rome that the legal framework between the two countries is adequate and does not need to be changed,” the minister said. Predoiu explained that the legal cooperation involves both bilateral and multilateral agreements, such as those under the aegis of the Council of Europe, of the UNO and the European Commission. Predoiu underscored that the legal framework between the two countries is compliant with the European norms and provides the necessary instruments with a view to protecting the interests of the Romanian citizens in Italy.

„This bilateral legal framework offers both states the necessary tools to protect their own interests and their own citizens. As regards the issue of transferring sentenced criminals, cooperation is based on the Council of Europe's Convention from 1983 and on the Romanian-Italian legal agreement signed in 2003. Neither the Convention in 1983, nor the agreement of 2003 do not stipulate the states' obligation to automatically transfer a certain number of offenders to the other state, but stipulate the obligation to cooperate in the issue of transferring the offenders,” Predoiu explained.
