BOR spends 37M lei in social-charity activity, in 2008

The Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR) Patriarchy allocated round 37 million lei to its social-charity activity, in 2008, reads the review presented during a meeting of the BOR National Council, on February 23.
 
The Patriarchy supported over 400,000 floods-hit victims, 136,000 children in the BOR social establishments, most of them are poor families, 31,000 disabled people, dumb, deaf and blind ones, or drug and alcohol addicted, and people suffering from HIV/AIDS, victims of the persons involved in trafficking, of delinquents, 119,000 elderly people of the social security shelters, night shelters, bed-ridden, abandoned elderly suffering with serious health problems and almost 120,000 poor and homeless families, along with young people, students, unemployed, released inmates or flood or other calamities-hit victims.
 
BOR social charity activity in its 28 dioceses is carried out by 994 people and the whole Romanian Patriarchy numbers 345 charity establishments, 109 of them for children, 51 for the elderly, 106 soup kitchens and social bread lines, 23 surgeries and two social drugstores, 11 diagnosis and treatment centers for people with special needs, 33 consulting centers and one center for the victims of the human trafficking and 19 centers for families in need.
 
The Filantropia (Charity) Federation was set up with a view to the development and enlargement of the social charity activities that together with the Social Charity Sector of the Patriarchal Administration drew up and lodged five projects to be financed on EU funds. As many as 538 chaplains provide religious assistance in military units, hospitals and social security centers, 141 in military units and jails, 397 in hospitals and social security shelters. There are 433 churches and chapels in all such units and more 42 are under construction.
