Italian media: 40 pct of Romanians on international search warrant are in Italy

24 februarie 2009

Information in English

Part of the Italian newspapers such as La Repubblica, Il Giornale and La Stampa, in the opening of items reporting about Monday night's meeting between Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini and visiting Romanian counterpart Cristian Diaconescu announce that 40 percent of the Romanians on an international search warrant are in Italy. The figure was released by Romanian Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu on Monday.

The left-wing Italian daily also quotes Frattini as saying there will be 'zero tolerance' towards the Romanian criminals and asking for the bilateral legal framework to be modified so that the Romanians who got a final sentence in the Italian prisons be sent back to Romania as fast as possible to serve their term; however, the daily fails to report that Frattini and Diaconescu called on the public to stop generalising the issue of delinquency among the Romanian community.

The other big-selling Italian left-wing daily La Stampa carries a pretty similar article, reporting however that the Romanian foreign minister opened the 'polemics' on the presumption of innocence and on the fact that the Italian state must protect the Romanian citizens and the Italians in an equal manner.

Il Giornale writes that such 'clear figures are frightening', but adds the Italian state has requested the transfer to Romanian prisons for just 57 Romanian convicts out of some 900 who got a final sentence and are now in the Italian prisons; it also quotes Predoiu as stressing that a sentence passed by the Italian justice is in no way recognised in Romania, with the Romanian magistrates having to review the files and pronounce on them.

The online page of Italian public television news programme Rainews24 carries a statement made by Frattini early on Tuesday for Skytg24 news broadcast saying there will be 'zero tolerance towards those who commit reprisals against the Romanian community'.
