Romania has achieved a very important thing by the dramatic cut (by 50 percent) of the dramatic pollution levels at the time it joined the European Union, but the same as the other member states, it can and must do more to combat the climate warming, said Lieve Fransen, director at the European Commission's Communication Directorate, at a conference on Romania and the climate changes on Thursday.

'Nobody has finished their work, every one must do more and therefore Romania must do more' with respect to lessening the effects of the climate changes, the Brussels official said, explaining it is about 'the advantages we can all have by turning off the lights, opening the windows, using the air conditioning less, using low-pollution cars, using bicycles, using the city transport at a greater extent and using the private one less'.

Fransen underscored that the measures Romania should take suffer no delay and they will help Romania save energy and implicitly depend less on such imports, create new jobs by developing new technologies and use the youths' creativity. The EC official said Romania has managed to cut the greenhouse gas emissions by closing some highly pollutant industrial sectors, but she added that new industrial sectors emerge at the same time – such as renewable energy – in which Romania can invest on a national level and at the same time attract foreign investments.
