Romanian employers to get holiday tickets only if they report profit

26 februarie 2009

Information in English

Romanian employers may offer holiday tickets to employees only if they reported profit or turnover in the previous fiscal year, according to a government emergency ordinance recently published in the Official Gazette. The holiday tickets were set at the value of up to six gross minimum wages a ticket and can be used starting with the Easter Holiday. The holiday tickets are issued by special units licensed by the Finance Ministry and can only be used for the purchase of tourist services in the tourist units approved by the Tourism Ministry.

They are valid one year since their issuing and have nominal values of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 lei. The ordinance also stipulates that the employers and trade unions or the employees' representatives jointly establish the tickets issuer. The employees that benefit by holiday tickets do no longer cash in the holiday bonus during the fiscal year. According to Tourism Minister Elena Udrea, one of the results expected from this measure is that of taxation, given that most tourist activities unfold on the underground market. Another effect is an increased consumption and creation of extra jobs in the field.
