CCSB poll: Basescu topping public notoriety rankings, Oprescu first in public trust

President Traian Basescu is the public person enjoying the highest public notoriety rates, while Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu is the public person topping the public trust rankings, reveal data of a recent poll conducted by the Sociological Surveys and Branding Company (CCSB) and released on Friday.
 
The politicians enjoying a public notoriety of 90 percent and more are President Basescu (97 percent); former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, former Romania's President Ion Iliescu, former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) Calin Popescu Tariceanu, national leader of the now extra-parliamentary Greater Romania Party (PRM) Corneliu Vadim Tudor, all with 96 percent each; national leader of the New Generation Party (PNG) George Becali and First Deputy Chairman of the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L) Theodor Stolojan, 95 percent each; national leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana (94 percent); Prime Minister Emil Boc (93 percent); Transport Minister Elena Udrea, and former foreign minister and defence minister Teodor Melescanu, 92 percent each.
 
As far as public trust is concerned, the only public figures to have passed the 50-percent threshold are Sorin Oprecu (53 percent) and Traian Basescu (51 percent). They are followed in the rankings by Emil Boc (42 percent), Teodor Melescanu (40 percent) and Mircea Geoana (38 percent). As far as public trust in political parties is concerned, first came in the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L), a partner in the ruling coalition, with 42 percent. The Social Democratic Party (PSD), the other partner in the ruling coalition, follows with 40 percent.
 
The rankings continue with the National Liberal Party (PNL), 26 percent; the Conservative Party (PC), 19 percent; the Greater Romania Party (PRM), 16 percent; the Christian Democratic New Generation Party (PNG-CD), 12 percent; the National Initiative Party (PIN), 8 percent, and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), 8 percent. The Fire Brigade and the Church are the public institutions enjoying the highest degree of public trust, the CCSB poll indicates.
 
The Fire Brigade is first, with 91 percent, followed by the Church (84 percent), the Army (68 percent), opinion polls institutes (65 percent), the mass-media (65 percent), the Gendarmerie (60 percent) and town halls (57 percent). Below the 50-percent threshold were the Presidency (48 percent), the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and the Police (43 percent each), NGOs (35 percent), trade unions and banks (32 percent), the Government (26 percent), the judiciary (22 percent), Parliament (20 percent) and political parties (14 percent).
 
The poll was conducted by CCSB February 21-24, on a sample of 1,131 persons. The poll is conducted on a monthly basis to follow the latest developments in the public perceptions of Romanian over the political and social life in the country. The sample, validated against the 2007 Statistics Yearbook of Romania's National Statistics Institute (INS) and the 2002 population census. It carries an error margin of 3 percent and a probability of 95 percent.
