Loading ...Speaker of Romania's Chamber of Deputies Roberta Anastase believes that the European Parliament (EP) and the national parliaments should work complementarily, although they may be different. The Chamber of Deputies reports in a press release issued on Friday that Anastase presented to a conference in Paris of parliament chairmen from European Union member states on the institutional future of the European Union and the implementation of the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty in the national legislations suggestions for the relationship between the European Parliament and the EU national parliaments.
Anastase says that the national parliaments should get involved in circulating as much information as possible about the functioning of the European Parliament. Anastase also talked about a more efficient cooperation between parliaments when it comes to the EU member states passing European legislation. 'Before a draft normative act is drawn up by the EU, it should be debated on by the national parliaments, because so far there has been only subsequent debate, which makes any amendment of proposals harder when they do not fit some states,' Anastase is said to have told the conference.
Anastase also said that the European Commission and the European Council can contribute to boosting the involvement of national parliaments, as provided for under the Lisbon Treaty. 'Our intention is to initiate a debate also before the approval of initiatives involving MPs and officials of the parliaments operating in Brussels. We believe such approach will help the construction of a national legislation consistent with the European one,' said Anastase.
