President Basescu to attend informal meeting of EU heads of states and governments

Romania's President Traian Basescu will attend the informal meeting of the EU heads of states and governments, due in Brussels on Sunday, and aimed at approaching the topic of overcoming the current economic and financial crisis, the Presidential Administration informed on Friday. The EU leaders will debate the proposals and the initiatives that the European Union (EU) is to promote at the European Council spring session on the reform of the international financial system, due in Brussels, on March 19-20 and at the G20 Summit due in London, on March 2.
 
The additional steps to be taken at European level to stabilize the financial sector is one of the meeting's main topics. In the context, the participants will refer to the consolidation of the EU's macro financial stability and the regulation and the surveillance of the financial institutions. The EU officials will examine the national anti-crisis plans the EU states adopted and the manner how they harmonize with the European Economic Recovery Plan, which the European Council okayed on Dec 10-11, 2008.
 
Likewise, before the informal meeting, President Basescu will participate in the coordination meeting of the Visegrad Group of the Baltic countries, Romania and Bulgaria. The meeting's goal is the preparation of the informal meeting and an opinion exchange on the measures for resolving the economic financial crisis adopted in the EU countries not part the Euro area, as well as the reaffirmation of the importance of the observance of the single market rules and of avoiding protectionism.
 
The participants will also discuss the stage of the negotiations referring to the climate changes in advance of the Conference of the Parties in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Changes, due in Copenhagen in December this year.
