2 martie 2009

Information in English

President Traian Basescu said, on Sunday, March 1, at the end of an informal meeting of the heads of state and government in the EU, that Romania does not like meetings in a limited format of the EU member states, prior to the works of the European Council. "Speaking of the first meeting (on the sidelines of the European Council, e.n.), to which nine states have been invited, the stance of Romania has been voiced very clearly, we have said that we do not find such formats good. We believe that within the EU all the states have equal rights, for that matter, that is what has been said in the plenum of the European Council.

Such meetings are not necessarily characteristic of the main element of the EU which means solidarity, " said president Basescu, at a news conference held after the EU Council. The Romanian head of state said that during the meeting preceding the assembly of the European Council, Romania voiced this point of view, and at the meeting of the Council proper, it voiced its position regarding the economic crisis, the main topic of the talks.

Early on Sunday, before the informal meeting of the EU Council, President Basescu attended a meeting of coordination of the Visegrad group, of the Balkan countries, Romania and Bulgaria. The purpose of the meeting has been the preparation of the informal meeting and an exchange of opinions regarding the measures taken in the EU member states that are not in the euro area, for finding a solution to the economic-financial crisis, the re-affirmation of the importance of the observance of the rules of the single market and the avoidance of protectionism.
