Romanian films to be screened in Berlin for a month

4 martie 2009

Information in English

An important event devoted to the Romanian contemporary filmmaking will be held in Berlin on Tuesday evening. It will be organized by the Zueghaus Kino in partnership with the Titu Maiorescu Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin and with the support of the National Centre of Cinematography. For one month they will screen 34 Romanian films, which were shot starting in 2003, from short and medium-length films to documentary or full-length feature films.

This event is the fifth organized every year by the Zeughaus Kino, an institution with a special profile, like a film archive, an integral part of the well-known Museum of German History (Deutsches Historisches Museum – DHM). Romanian films will be screened every day from March 3 to 31, in the hall of the cinema seating 165 people within the DHM, which is situated in the historical centre of Berlin, in the near vicinity of the Museum Island.

"An event that presents, in an extensive selection, a cinematography which seemed to have disappeared completely in 2000 when no Romanian film was made and which, in the past few years, has become one of the most protean and inciting cinema cultures at world level," reads the booklet presenting the above-mentioned event.

The list of full-length films includes all the titles that won prizes at the big international festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Angers, San Sebastian, Venice, Montpelier, Thessaloniki, Zagreb, Bangkok, Cluj-Napoca, films that directed international attention to the new Romanian filmmaking: Cristi Puiu's "The Death of Mr Lazarescu" (2005), Ruxandra Zenide's "Ryna" (2005), Corneliu Porumboiu's "12:08 East of Bucharest" (2006), Catalin Mitulescu's "The Way I Spent the End of the World" (2006), Radu Muntean's "The Paper Will Be Blue" (2006), Tudor Giurgiu's "Love Sick" (2006), Cristian Mungiu's "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" (2007), Cristian Nemescu's "California Dreamin'" (2007), Nae Caranfil's "The Rest Is Silence" (2007), Radu Muntean's "Boogie" (2008), George Dorobantu's "Elevator" (2008). The selection also includes Lucian Pintilie's films: "Niki Ardelean, Reserve Colonel" (2003) and "Tertium non datur" (2005).
