Romanian, German foreign ministers meet in Berlin
4 martie 2009
Moves to lessen the effects of the economic crisis, the Danube River cooperation and finding new projects on environment, tourism and business were the main topics tackled by Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu and German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier during talks on Tuesday on the occasion of a visit the Romanian minister is paying to Berlin, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said in a release.
Diaconescu underscored that Germany is one of the most important partners of Romania in the European Union and added that Germany currently is Romania's top commercial partner, being one of the most important investors in Romania with 2.6 billion euros worth of investments, the release said. The two ministers swapped views on the measures meant to lessen the effects of the global economic and financial crisis. Both Romania and Germany back the moves to promote a common European policy on energy that are meant to provide the energy security of the European Union member states, the ministry said.
'In this context, I want to underscore Germany's support for the Nabucco (pipeline) project which we deem vital to the energy security of Europe and which represents a priority for Romania', the release quotes Diaconescu as saying. German vice chancellor Steinmeier said both Germany and Romania are currently facing similar problems resulting from the economic crisis and added the two governments are seriously concerned with finding solutions, on a national level included, in order to combat the crisis.
Furthermore, as Minister Diaconescu pointed out, Romania and Germany share a convergent approach to most of the important files such as the European prospects of the Western Balkans, the cooperation in the Black Sea area, the trans-Atlantic partnership, the strengthening of the European identity in NATO or the Middle East peace process. The Danube River cooperation was another topic on which the two sides voiced convergent stands.
Diaconescu and Steinmeier decided to keep on finding new projects on environment, tourism and business as well projects to support the development of the local administrative capacity along the Danube transport route, the release said. Diaconescu said Romania is interested in further being a strong and serious partner for the promotion of the Eastern Partnership, an initiative launched by Germany when it held the European Union presidency.
The Romanian foreign minister is paying a working visit to Berlin on Tuesday and Wednesday. He is also scheduled to meet on Tuesday Bundestag vice president Susanne Kastner, chairman of the Bundestag's European Affairs Commission Guenther Krichbaum and commission members. Late in the day, Diaconescu will attend debates on the EU eastern policy hosted by Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
