“The Rest is Silence” by Nae Caranfil picks nine Gopo awards

"The Rest is Silence" film directed by Nae Caranfil won The Best Film Award at the 3rd edition of the Gopo Awards Gala, with the winner receiving the prize from the hands of the Minister of Culture, Religious Affairs and National patrimony Theodor Paleologu. 'We are going to conquer the world with our films! We are to conquer the world!', was shouting character Leon from the 'The Rest is Silence' and the film of Nae Caranfil conquered indeed, if not the world, at least this year's edition of the Gopo Awards, taking 9 prizes, with 14 nominations behind.
 
'I have deep admiration for the 'elder generation' (of the Romanian cinematography), and I want to pay a profound homage to sacred monsters, but I feel a special connection to the 'new wave' Minister Paleologu said, before handing over The Best Film Award to Nae Caranfil. After it had conquered the Gopo Awards and while getting the trophy for The Best Script, the director of the film mentioned that this will be like a guarantee for the people to come to the cinema halls. The film took also:
 
The Best Supporting Actress (Ioana Bulca – in Aristizza), the Best Image (Marius Panduru), The Best Scene Painting (Calin Papura and Ruxandra Ionica), The Best Sound (Florin Tabacaru, Stefan Crisan and Brian Riordan), The Best Original Music (Laurent Couson), the Best Editing (Dan Nanoveanu), and the Best Costumes (Doina Levintza). 'The Rest is Silence' was Romania's proposal on the long list of the 2009 edition of the Oscar, in the category The Best Foreign Film (other than English) and was one of the most appreciated and awarded films of the Romanian Union of Filmmakers.
 
Radu Muntean was also among the winners of this year's edition of the Gopo Awards, his film Boogie bringing him The Best Director Award, with the Chairman of the National Centre of Cinematography Eugen Serbanescu being the one that handed him over the award. The two main actors in Muntean's film, Anamaria Marinca and Dragos Bucur, won The Best Leading Actress and The Best Leading Actor awards.
 
Radu Jude, maybe one of the most promising Romanian directors, managed to win with 'Alexandra' The Best Short-Length Award. Thomas Ciulei won The Best Documentary Award for 'Flower Bridge'. The film 'I served the King of England' (Czech Republic, Slovakia, 2006) directed by Jiri Menzel, won The Best European Film Award, with the distinction being announced by the Chairman of the deputies Chamber Committee for Culture Raluca Turcan.
 
There were also nominated in this category fiction films 'On the Other Side' by Fatih Akin, 'Persepolis' by Marjanne Saytrapi and Vicent Paronnaud and 'In the Classroom' by Laurent Cantet. 'The Survivor' film directed by Sergiu Nicolaescu got the Public's Award, offered for the most successful Romanian film at box-office in 2008. Nicolaescu's film sold 25,706 tickets last year. There were also offered at the 3rd edition of the Gopo Awards other three special prizes, to director and playwright Elisabeta Bostan, actor Marin Moraru and sound engineer Andrei Pap.
 
The Association for Promotion of Romanian Film organized the 3rd edition of the Gopo Awards, in partnership with the national center of Cinematography. There were as many as 400 professionals from the Romanian film industry secretly voting the winners of the Gopo statues, made by sculptor Adrian Ilfoveanu.
