Basescu: Strategic partnership quite natural between Romania and Poland
6 martie 2009
A strategic partnership between Romania and Poland is quite natural, said President Traian Basescu, who is on a one-day official visit to Warsaw on Thursday, at the end of the meeting with his counterpart Lech Kaczynski. "In my opinion, the declaration we adopted, according to which both states should start a strategic partnership, is the most important political act that has taken place during this visit.
I feel confident that between Romania and Poland there are so many common points that a strategic partnership is quite natural," said Traian Basescu. In his turn President Lech Kaczynski emphasized the good cooperation between the two states and mentioned the fact that soon they would hold the high-level meeting of the NATO member states "We have agreed on certain questions that are common subjects of international cooperation … I am a supporter of some relations as close as possible between Poland and Romania," said the Polish Head of State.
Traian Basescu said that during the talks they also approached the question of the Republic of Moldova, the Romanian Head of State thanking in this respect the Polish President for the support given within the European Union to the Romanian policy of backing the Republic of Moldova. "We have also approached the Ukrainian question, which is of major interest both for Poland and Romania, considering the neighbourhood and the need to go on supporting this country [Ukraine] on its way to Europe," said Traian Basescu.
He added that they also approached the question of the common farming policy in the EU and made it clear that the viewpoints of the two countries were quite similar. "Our stands coincide on the next budget of the Union, the one for 2013. We are going to support unreservedly the continuation of a policy that should guarantee the good farming output in our countries, the more so as Europe was a little affected by an incipient food crisis a year ago," said Traian Basescu.
According to him the sides also talked about the question of energy, correlated with the difficulties that were obvious in point of the energy supply to Europe this winter. "Both of us have come to the conclusion that the European projects, be they the project of interest for Poland or the Nabucco project, are priorities and will have to be backed within the European Union," concluded President Traian Basescu.
