Romania's local software industry offers investors development opportunities and a large number of IT specialists when seen against the total population, and from this perspective Romania might win an important place on the development map of Intel, Intel CEO Craig Barrett told daily Ziarul financiar in an interview on Thursday. Romania could become a research and development market for Intel in the future.

The company is currently expanding such activities in Europe, and I believe Romania will play an important part in the development strategy, says CEO of the US Intel Corporation Barrett. Barrett also says that the countries investing in research and development stand to win. Both the countries and the corporations may win from opportunities and invest in overcoming recession, says Barrett.

The crisis is affecting Romania as well, albeit at a smaller scale than in other countries. Intel Corporation feels the recession firstly because most of the IT customers are facing problems, which means a significant slowdown in sales. Yet, this will not slow down technology, which is a reason why Intel will continue to carry out investments this year as well and keeping up the $6 billion level of the years before, says Barrett, adding that the recession will select the companies that are able to stand even amidst precarious economic conditions.

Barrett was awarded this week an honorary doctorate from the Bucharest University of Polytechnics (UPB), the highest distinction awarded by UPB to public persons.
