MEPs of Social Democratic Party (PSD) Victor Bostinaru and Daciana Sarbu initiated on Tuesday a written statement on setting up a working group to draw up and implement the strategy for the Danube, a news release reads.
According to the initiators the statement project is agreed upon with EU Commissioner for Environment Stavros Dimas, and the document's main goal is to place the Danube Delta among the priorities of the European Parliament and the EU Commission.
The statement has in view the uniqueness and the fragility of the Danube and the Danube Delta, an ecosystem sheltering rare plant species threatened with human-caused pollution, which can do irreparable damage as well as the fact that the riparian countries have different statuses and thus have different levels of EU and international laws enactment. The PSD MEPs ask the EU Commission to create a working group, whose goal is to set up and implement a Danube strategy focusing on the environment development and protection, under the surveillance of the EU Commissioner.
Likewise, the initiators ask the EU Commission to institutionalize the dialogue with the EU countries to draw up EU-funded integrated projects focusing on the sustainable cross -border development in the Danube Delta.
Another claim is that the EU member and the partner states located along the banks of the Danube River and the Delta should cooperate in good faith and implement all the relevant accords on the Danube's protection, particularly the Espoo, Aarhus and Berna the Conventions.
Victor Bostinaru a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Development, organized the Danube Delta European Heritage Photography Exhibition and held the first Conference on the Danube Delta – Nature and Sustainable Development in Europe, at the EP, on Dec 2-4, 2008. The protection of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is one of the priorities of the member of the EO Committee on Environment MEP Daciana Sarbu.
