The government has signed no political agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said, on Wednesday, at Victoria Palace, PM Emil Boc.
"I have had on Wednesday talks with President Mircea Geoana.
We will have on Thursday a meeting of the coalition, with details on these topics. Virtually, I have read the communique of the European Commission, under the common aegis of the chairmanship of the ECOFIN Council and the European Commission, clearly saying that the commission has shown reediness to support Romania, financially, and that it holds tight consultations with the Romanian authorities and the IMF, for the drawing up of a common answer regarding the funding necessities, with the financing first evoked at a meeting on Jan 12, in Brussels," the prime minister said.
His remarks came in answer to what the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana said, namely that the Government had no political mandate for negotiating with the IMF.
"I believe that it is not normal to have a talk and a preliminary invitation of those from the Fund in Bucharest, there is nothing wrong.
But I believe it is bad for Romania to enter possible negotiations without having, first, a clear mandate of negotiation, without having a clear project for averting the economic recession, and a clear image as regards the consequences and conditions of such an agreement. I believe that the obligation of the Executive and of the ruling coalition is to answer these questions… A possible agreement with IMF can be a last conclusion in a large package of measures, of initiatives of the domestic and international public position of Romania," stressed Mircea Geoana.
