The European Parliament (EP) on Thursday passed the resolution initiated by the Romanian MEP Rovana Plumb, of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which is part of the ruling coalition, on the problem of children of immigrants , who are left by their parents in the countries of origin.
The PSD MEP Rovana Plumb previously asked the European Commission (EC) about the situation of the 350,000 Romanian children whose parents left their native country to work abroad.
'The vast majority by which the resolution was passed proves how serious this phenomenon is and how important it is to the European deputies. I hope that, taking into account this resolution, the EU member states will take measures so as to improve the situation of the children left behind by their parents who went to work abroad, and help them develop normally, from a psychological point of view.
These children are part of the future EU and we have to take good care of them,' the Social Democratic MEP told. Rovana Plumb's initiative is part of a larger number of actions taken by the European Socialists in their attempt to improve the situation of children in all the EU member states.
The resolution passed by the MEPs showed that 'one of the undesired side effects of migration is also the precarious situation of the children left behind by their parents who go to work in another EU member state.'
The document , which was passed with a vote of 579 to 21 and 13 abstentions, asks the EC to conduct an evaluation of the proportions at European level of the phenomenon of the children who are left behind by their parents migrating to work in another country and also to collect data at EU level related to this phenomenon; to propose to all the parties concerned to make use of all the existing means to support the immigrants and their children, who did not leave their country of origin.
Moreover, the MEPs asked the EU member states to take steps meant to improve the situation of those children left behind by their parents and to help them develop normally, benefit from education and an appropriate social life; to create mechanisms of cooperation meant to prevent such devastating effects on families, especially on children, caused by the separation from their parents and the distance between them; to better inform immigrants and their families of their rights, with regard to the free movement and the information available for them at both national and European level, referring to what living abroad means and also to the terms and conditions that come with getting a job abroad.
At the same time, the EP considers that the member states and the EC need to determine the social partners and the NGOs to get more involved in such actions aimed at improving the situation of children of migrants.
The resolution will be sent to the EC, the EU Council, the Committee of the Regions , the European Economic and Social Committee, the national parliaments of the EU member states and the social partners.
