Minister of Foreign Affairs Cristian Diaconescu discussed the minorities' topic on Thursday with his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic, who is paying a working visit to Bucharest.
Whereas the Chief of Romanian diplomacy said he was "encouraged" by the Serbian authorities' "preoccupation" towards the situation of the Romanian community on Timocului Valley, his counterpart Vuk Jeremic said that there is "no debatable topic" in the relations between the two countries on the minorities' topic.
"I am encouraged in connection with the Belgrade authorities concern over the situation of Romanians in Timocului Valley", pointed out Cristian Diaconescu in a joint press conference with his Serbian counterpart. Hearing that, Vuk Jeremic smiled and nodded. "There is no topic opened to dispute at the moment between Romania and Serbia, respectively between Serbia and Romania , and our governments will not allow such questionable issues to appear between the two countries", said Jeremic.
According to the census carried out by the Serbian authorities in 2002, some 2,500 Romanians live in Timocului Valley, but their number could be in fact some 250,000 people , Chief of Department for Relations with Romanians Everywhere Eugen Tomac recently stated. Romanians' organizations in Timocului Valley deplore the fact they have no schools and churches, where to use the Romanian language. The Romanian Orthodox Church in Malainita is confronted with strong pressures from the Serbian Bishopric in Timoc, the last one refusing to accept it.
