Romanian Press Club calling for reticence to restricted freedom of expression

16 martie 2009

Information in English

The Romanian Press Club (CRP) is calling on the chairs of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies as well as on parliamentarians and political leaders to display full reticence to what it claims are initiatives to restrict the freedom of expression attempted in the new Civil Code and seriously ponder on the consequences of promoting such initiatives, reads a press release issued by CRP on Monday (16 March).

"The Romanian Press Club is protesting at the opacity and bureaucracy on the part of the Romanian Government and Justice Ministry in approving the amendments of the Civil Code as far as the mass media are concerned," reads the release.

At the same time, CRP believes that by this modus operandi, the Government and the Justice Ministry have sent a negative message and ignored journalists, media people and mass media professional organisations in the process as far as the drawing up of regulations directly affecting their profession is concerned.

"The Romanian Press Club believes that protecting personal dignity should be an imperative of the media profession that should be achieved by scrupulously observing the self-regulatory codes. CRP is calling on journalists and media people to get in line with the rigors of self-regulation, as doing their job in a professional and fair manner is the best response to the ongoing attempts to restrict the freedom of expression," reads the release.CRP says it will hold a debate on mass-media regulation and self-regulation where invited to attend will be professional organisations and political leaders.
