The Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education (FSLI) reserves the right to withdraw its signature from the strategy on „Education and Research for the Society of Knowledge ,” considering the fact that both the Presidency and Romania's Government do not observe its provisions, FSLI president Aurel Cornea told.

The National Council of the Leaders of the Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education, which convened in Bucharest on Wednesday, examined the problems of Romanian education and of its employees after three months of government by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party and found that Law No 221/ 2008, a slogan that brought votes to the current coalition, was farther and farther from becoming reality immediately after the election was won.

„The failure to apply this  law reveals the boundless defiance of the political class to the teaching staff, a social and professional category that goes on being discriminated when compared with other categories of budget employees,” says Aurel Cornea. The leaders have also found that the measures meant to cut certain additions and rights of the budget employees Romania's Government intends to take lead to a genuine wage sacrifice spiral the employees working in education will be subjected to.

„There is no coherent and unitary outlook on the reform in education and the steps taken by the ministry can only lead to chaos and the framework plans for the secondary   education were changed by MECI [the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation] in haste and chaotically without an impact study and a professional examination being made, a measure that led to the creation of tension among teachers, pupils and parents,” says the trade union leader.

Under these circumstances, the National Council of the FSLI Leaders decided to consult with the trade union members on starting again the labour conflict that was suspended last November. The schedule of protest actions will be established by common agreement with the other representative trade union federations in education.
