19 martie 2009
Senate's Chairman Mircea Geoana, President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, in the ruling coalition) , urged the European Commission to support Romania in its negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
PSD leader, accompanied by Vice-premier Dan Nica, have paid over March 18 and 19, 2009 a visit to Brussels, occasion for a series of meetings with Joaquin Almunia, European Commissioner for Monetary and Economic Affairs, Gunter Verheugen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Margaret Wallstrom, Vice -president of the European Commission, Poul Nyroup Rasmussen, leader of the European Socialist Party, Martin Schultz, leader of the European Socialists delegation in the European Parliament , as well as with other European socialist leaders.
During talks with Joaquin Almunia, Mircea Geoana urged the representatives of the European Commission to support Romania within negotiations for an eventual loan abroad, so that it will not be forced to put up with extremely severe conditions.
"Obviously, a foreign loan must include adjustment conditions, but not so severe as to compromise the convergence idea and the idea of solidarity of the European social model", stated the Social Democrat leader, according to a release remitted by PSD Press office. Moreover, Mircea Geoana asked the European commissioners Joaquin Almunia and Gunter Verheugen to move ahead the allocation of European funds earmarked for Romania over 2011-2013, so that it could access them during the period 2009- 2010, depending on the readied projects and of the administrative capacity Romania must develop.
At the same time, PSD President showed concern for the internal and international economic outlook. "The European Council, which will also mark the big political families meetings , should lead to a more coherent approach by the EU of Romania's economic situation because, currently, economic forecasts further reflect a deterioration of the economic situation in the majority of the European countries", stated Mircea Geoana.
The Social Democrat leader insisted that Romania should not be affected during negotiations with the economic institutions by experiences lately with states such as Latvia. "It is very important that, in the shortest time possible, all interested sides reach a joint standpoint, so we could have a clearer image on the economic outlook and, as a result, of the foreign financing needs and the eventual need of a higher budget deficit than the one approved through the state budget", said Mircea Geoana.
