Romania's general prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi on Tuesday at the World General Prosecutors Summit said that Romanian citizens see the prosecutors' independence from the political class as priority.
Kovesi pointed out that in terms of system independence, a clear and transparent delimitation of the prosecutor's services from the political class was essential.

Kovesi explained that at the initiative of the Romanian Public Ministry, serval sociologic studies have been conducted, to find out people's perception over the legal system and the prosecutors' activity. The studies revealed that the political field is seen, by 30 percent of respondents, as the most likely to put pressure on prosecutors.
According to Kovesi, ''governmental offenses gained a significant social importance and there is the risk that any foreign interference with the prosecutors' activity might turn into an attempt to favor a political client or harass an opponent.
On the other hand, Kovesi believes that the prosecutors' independence does not involve the absence of any relation with the legislative and executive power. She believes that defining the limits of the concept of a prosecutor's independence is necessary. "The prosecutors' independence and responsibility are not principles that exclude each other but have to be interpreted in a complementary manner , so that each should underline the potential of the other," Kovesi explained.
