European Parliament members on Thursday have adopted a report drawn up by Francisco Jose Millan Mon (EPP -ED), urging the US "to lift visas for the six EU member states that have not been included in the visa waiver program and to treat all EU citizens equally, base don full reciprocity."
According to the report, adopted with 503 votes in favor, 51 against and 10 abstentions, the visa waiving matter must be a priority of the European Commission in the dialogue with the new Washington Administration.
The EP members invite the EU and the US develop a joint strategy as regards the six states in Eastern Europe (Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus) to reach concrete and sustainable results in implementing the new Eastern Partnership and the Black Sea Synergy.
In his address related to this issue, Romanian MEP Calin Catalin Chirita said that all European citizens who want to travel to the US have to receive equal treatment and that "it is unacceptable that a part of the EU citizens are treated as second-hand citizens."
In his turn, MEP Ioan Mircea Pascu said the current crisis and joint challenges for the EU and the US – such as energy, weather changes, regional issues like the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Africa – call for cooperation between these two major international players.
