Loading ...Romanian MEPs Alin Antochi, representing the Social Democratic Party, stated before the European Parliament's plenary sitting the need to identify the legal line able to separate the fundamental security and liberties of the Internet users from their unlimited monitoring by authorities, so that the European legislation becomes effective and not excessive in trying to cope with online crime.
"The Internet has now entered a new stage, being an indispensable tool in the field of business and a global forum of expressing various opinions.
However, this evolution generated two positions: on the one hand, the Internet further provides fabulous opportunities as catalyst of educational, cultural, economic and social development and on the other hand, it is a platform able to be used to promote violent behaviours that threaten people's freedom and security," Antochi said during the debates on the Lambrinidis report regarding "the consolidation of security and fundamental freedoms in the Internet network."
According to Antochi, "defining some global standards for data protection, security and freedom of expression on the Internet, through sustainable cooperation between Internet operators and users is needed.".
