Loading ...The Social Democrat MEPs Adrian Severin and Victor Bostinaru organized, at the European Parliament , the conference titled "Political Stabilization of Central and Eastern Europe after the First World War. The Fall of the Soviet Hungarian Republic," which was attended by European deputies and historians from Romania, Poland and Slovakia, informs a release issued on Thursday.
The above-mentioned event, which considered the part played by Romania and other states in preventing the setting up of the totalitarian regimes in Central and Eastern Europe, is, together with the conference titled "1968 – Prague Spring: Romania, a Distinct Voice among the Warsaw Pact Countries" (May 2008) , part of the steps taken by the Social Democrat MEPs meant to promote Romania as a country which made its contribution that one could not ignore to bringing about a certain course of European history.
"Politicians must not establish the historical truth, it is not up to them, but they cannot ignore history and the European Parliament is an optimum body for debates, for discussions about the common past and especially about the lessons taught by it for the future. Such events like the one that has been organized today prove that certain states managed, periodically in the course of time, not to be objects but subjects of history," said Adrian Severin.
Victor Bostinaru also said that the theme mentioned before was extremely topical for, when considering the events that occurred 90 years ago, some of the lessons of that time are still valid. "The main lesson is that, at a time of crisis, there may appear radicalisms that destroy the democratic states and lead to authoritarianism. It is also to be remarked that Romania played the part of a stabilizer in Central and Eastern Europe, having a moderate response in 1919 in the name of the values that were subsequently incorporated in the system of after-war treaties," said Victor Bostinaru.
