Loading ...The executive committee of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) on Thursday has unanimously approved the recommendation that the party's president Mircea Geoana be proposed as the Social Democrats' candidate to next year's presidential elections, in an future extraordinary congress to be held some time this spring.
"I have decided to summon a National Council aimed at preparing a congress for the assigning of PSD's candidate to presidency.
I am very pleased and honored of being appointed candidate to presidency," Geoana said after the meeting. He underscored he would propose PSD's National Standing Bureau (BPN) the organization of a National Council before the start of the election campaign for the the European parliament elections early this May.
Asked whether the list of potential nominees remains open, Geoana have an affirmative answer, but added the party's executive council decided the PSD president should run for the position of head of state. Asked if he plans to resign in case he fails, Geoana answered he was confident he would win and the problem was who would replace him at the helm of the party.
The executive committee also agreed to include in the BPN representatives outside Bucharest, who scored the best results at the parliamentary elections. Starting next Monday, head of the Vrancea County Council Marian Oprisan and town and village mayors with the best electoral results will be part of the BPN.
