President Basescu attends NATO anniversary summit

President Traian Basescu on Friday and Saturday will attend the anniversary summit of the North Atlantic Alliance marking 60 years since the setting up of this organization.
The heads of the NATO member states will mark the event in places symbolizing the FrenchGerman reconciliation: Strasbourg in France and Kehl and Baden-Baden   in Germany. This way they celebrate the  60th anniversary of signing the Washington Treaty, which laid the foundations of NATO.
 
Besides the events devoted to the celebration of the NATO  60th anniversary, accepting Croatia  and Albania  as  NATO  member  states and accepting France  on the  Defence Planning Committee   after an absence that lasted forty years, the leaders of the NATO member states will try, on April 3 and 4, to adopt some clear measures for the future action and functioning of the North Atlantic Alliance.
 
The situation in Afghanistan is one of the key-subjects expecting a clear answer from the leaders of the member states during this summit, the cooperation relation with the Russian Federation, especially as regards the sensitive files such as the anti-missile shield, Georgia and the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, planning a  new strategic concept of the North Atlantic Alliance, the NATO role  in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture, the aspects referring to the relations with the European Union, the OSCE and the UN being examined again.
 
Romania's Parliament convened on Tuesday, the Head of State and the Premier attending, in a solemn meeting in order to mark 60 years since the setting up of NATO and five years since Romania's joining the Alliance.
On this occasion the law-making body adopted a resolution mentioning the road taken by Romania in the process of joining NATO and shows Romania's support to the promotion of an active policy of the Alliance meant to attract the states in the Western Balkans, Georgia and Ukraine.
 
On March 29, 2004 Romania became a fully fledged member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), together with another six states (Bulgaria, Estonia , Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia). The number of the Alliance was thus 26, this being the most extensive enlargement of the above-mentioned organization.
In April 2008 Bucharest hosted the high-level meting of the NATO member states, this being the first summit in the history of the North Atlantic Alliance organized in a former socialist state.
