Loading ...Romanian Major Petre Tiberius, who died on Friday in Afghanistan in a fire trading with insurgents, was posthumously decorated by President Traian Basescu with a Romania's Star National Order in the rank of Cavalier with war insignias.
'President Traian Basescu signed a decree bestowing a Romania's Star National Order in the rank of Cavalier with war insignias on Major Petre Marcel Tiberius as a token of appreciation for his exceptional devotion to the carrying out of a war mission in the Afghan theatre of operations in which he sacrificed his life,' reads a press release issued by the Romanian President's Press Office.
Petre Tiberius, of the Vultures 1st Battalion Forces for Special Operations died as he was heading a rapid reaction mission in support of an allied sub-unit that had came under the insurgent fire. The Romanian Defence Ministry informs that on Friday morning, at 01:00 GMT, a Romanian US rapid intervention team acted in support of an attacked allied subunit at nearly 80 km southwest of Kabul.
The Romanian officer was shot in a fire trading. He was urgently evacuated by helicopter, but died some half an hour later, as he was rushed to the hospital. Romanian troops serving with the special operation forces are active in the eastern part of Afghanistan, within ISAF.
Petre Tiberius was married, with one child. Aged 33, he had been hired by the Romanian Defence Ministry in 2000 and was on his second mission to Afghanistan. Romania has deployed 956 troops in Afghanistan, 899 of whom carry out missions under the ISAF command. There are 10 Romanian troops having so far been killed in mission in Afghanistan.
