We want NATO to keep its political neutrality towards Kosovo
3 aprilie 2009
Romania believes that the North-Atlantic Alliance has to keep its political neutrality towards Kosovo and it will insist at the NATO summit in Strasbourg and Kehl that Serbia receives a message for access in the Euro-Atlantic structures, said president Traian Basescu on Friday, on Henri Coanda Airport , before his departure for the high-level meeting of the Alliance.
"We do not want a political commitment, we only want a military one of the Alliance, as regards Kosovo. As for Serbia, we are insisting that it continues what it has already started in Bucharest, we insist that in the final declaration of the summit there is a message of opening as regards Serbia's access to the Euro-Atlantic structures," said the head of state. He stressed that Romania believes that NATO has to keep its commitments towards Ukraine and Georgia, assumed at the NATO summit in Bucharest, of last year.
Our point of view is that the Alliance has to keep its commitments made in Bucharest towards Ukraine and Georgia, with the very clear mentioning that the two countries have to thoroughly undertake the reform processes, which have to be met with a view to the access to the Alliance, " said Traian Basescu.
Last but not least, the head of state stressed that Romania wants that the anniversary NATO summit in Strasbourg and Kehl to continue to mention the Black Sea area as " a region of interest and a strategic element of security within NATO security policies, keeping in this way the message sent in 2008, in Bucharest. He added that the security of the Black Sea is not possible without a commitment of the Russian Federation.
"The cooperation with the Russian Federation, following the conflict with Georgia has been questioned. Our point of view is that the cooperation between NATO and the Russian Federation has to be resumed, and Romania is one of the most interested countries that this cooperation be unfolded on the basis of principles set previously, on pragmatic bases, but starting from the reality that the security of the Black Sea is not possible without the commitment of the Russian Federation," explained president Basescu.
The head of state will take part, on Friday and Saturday, in the NATO anniversary summit, hosted by France and Germany. The summit, due in the cities of Kehl and Strasbourg, marks the anniversary of 60 years since the signing, in Washington, on April 4, 1949, of the North Atlantic Treaty. The Romanian delegation includes ForMin Cristian Diaconescu, and Defence minister Mihai Stanisoara.
Last year, Romania hosted the high-level meeting of the NATO member states, this was the first summit in the history of the North-Atlantic Alliance held in a former socialist state. Romania became a NATO member state on March 29, 2004, along with other six states, namely Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Thank you Romania for your continued support.
NATO is not and should never presume to be a political wing only a military one.
They have lost a lot of credibility but they should try to at least hold onto some of it now.
