President Traian Basescu on Saturday told the news conference given at the end of the NATO anniversary summit that Romania could increase its capacities in Afghanistan as regards institutional construction or army training.

"We have supported an extensive approach to the Afghanistan questions. A mere military approach is not enough. We are taking the pledge to go on increasing our capacities in Afghanistan as regards institutional construction, the training of the Afghan army or medical care. There are areas we think we can support together with our allies," said the Head of State.

He added that the summit in Strasbourg-Kehl adopted a declaration referring to Afghanistan and that this document   mostly agreed to Romania' stance on this subject, in the sense that the mere military contribution in the region in question turned out not to be enough.

"Following this declaration, the allies pledge to contribute to the institutional development of Afghanistan, to the training of the Afghan army, of the police, to the setting up of the institutions that, at a certain time, should be able to take over the responsibility of safely managing the Afghan territory," said Basescu.

"Romania has fully met the pledges it took at the Bucharest Summit. If at that time we used to have about 500 servicemen in Afghanistan, at present Romania has 1,000 servicemen in Afghanistan in areas where insurgents take action," said Basescu.

"My speech ended with a formula I do not know if people like, but I think it is extremely important, namely that any politician finds it difficult to go home and say that he should send more troops to Afghanistan. But this  is a risk politicians must run as there is an even higher risk: the Alliance will no longer be credible if NATO is no longer capable of winning the war in Afghanistan.

Then very few of our citizens would trust an alliance they regard as a sure aim for the national security of every one of its members," concluded President Traian Basescu.
