The Social Democrat leader also said that Romania, as a neighbouring country, could only find a situation of increasing instability in the east of this country.

Geoana: Romanian State not to get involved in domestic affairs of Republic of Moldova
7 aprilie 2009
The Romanian State did not and will not get involved in the domestic affairs of the Republic of Moldova, said chairman of the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana on Tuesday.
"In the year when Romania and democratic Europe celebrate 20 years since the fall of communism, a new Iron Curtain risks falling over Moldova and Eastern Europe.
The Romanian State did not and will not get involved in the domestic affairs of another country, but we are duty bound, together with the European Union, as EU member states, to see to it that the space east of the border of our country is a space of democracy, of stability, of prosperity and of dialogue," said Mircea Geoana.
He said that Romania could not look indifferently at what has been going on in the Republic of Moldova "for too many years." What is most important and what worries us most, added Geoana, is the fact that millions of people sharing Romania's language and values, who, roughly speaking, belong to what is called the Romanian nation, are deprived of the right and chance of going to Europe.
Geoana also said that the opinions and comments on the quality of the electoral process in the Republic of Moldova were different and that the European institutions said that, broadly speaking, the elections, leaving some small exceptions outside, were held in keeping with the European standards, the opposition alone being the one to mention non-democratic practices.
"At this moment, the most important thing is for us to say here too, on behalf of our party and of the Social Democrat MEPs, members of the European Socialist family, that the democratic process of a country is not to be judged on the day of the elections only. In the Republic of Moldova there is a practice of the lack of dialogue and what we can see in the streets of Chisinau is connected to the spontaneous revolt of the youths who are not able to see their European future as they want it to be," said the PSD leader.
In his opinion Romania is duty bound to give a signal of stability for the Republic of Moldova and excesses must also be avoided on both sides, thinks the PSD leader. "Violence breeds violence and the Republic of Moldova does not need violence.
But the Republic of Moldova is not allowed by Europe to be indifferent either. And the message of the Romanian political leaders, irrespective of the political family we belong to, is to give a signal to Europe too not to abandon the Republic of Moldova as a state that does not have a European destiny and to the power in Chisinau and the ones who obviously, by non-democratic practices, draw the Republic of Moldova away from Europe, that they are responsible for the good progress of this state," added Geoana.
"In Ukraine there are difficulties, in Moldova, in Georgia there was an open armed conflict a few months ago …
From our point of view it is extremely important for the Republic of Moldova to preserve its stability and its democratic road and we are sure that Europe, the US and the international organizations will again direct their attention to the Republic of Moldova as events prove once again that the democratic process is in distress, no matter what the results of the elections might be," also said Mircea Geoana.

Kick out the Communists and the Russians out of Moldova. Too bad, Romania is trying to be too diplomatic with this whole issue. Don’t get involved but at least speak up. Get off the fence and have an opinion on what’s going on in Moldova. Romania should support the people in Moldova. Being too diplomatic is counterproductive. Traiasca Romania intregita!!!
