The Romanian soldiers' effort in the operation theatres outside the Romanian borders provides the security of each citizen and is aimed at strengthening Romania's status of a NATO member, Prime Minister Emil Boc told the public radio on Tuesday.

'I sent condolences to the family and I sympathize with the fellows of the young man who was killed in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, bad news is part of this military life. The fact is Romania is a credible partner of what NATO means at this moment.

The effort being made by the Romanian Army, the effort being made by the Romanian soldiers beyond the country's borders actually provides the security of every one of us', Boc said. Each Romanian should owe gratitude to the officer killed in Afghanistan, he added. The prime minister stressed that Romania is part of the most consolidated collective security
structure in the world.

'Romania's membership of NATO proves that Romania benefits from a collective security system, the strongest in the world. Never in its history has Romania had such security guarantees as it has at present. We are part of the most consolidated collective security structure in the world and unfortunately for us, Romanians, when we lose a soldier our heart breaks.

This decision for us to take part in the operation theatres… is a condition for maintaining and strengthening Romania's status of a NATO member state', he said. A Romanian officer has been killed and four Romanian soldiers have been wounded in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the Romanian defence ministry announced.

A Romanian military convoy was the victim of an attack early on Tuesday, 20 km of Qalat. Captain Vasile Unguras of the 21st Maneuvering Battalion was killed when the vehicle he was in drove over an improvised bomb. The soldiers were on a patrol mission on the road from Kandahar to Kabul.
The Romanian troops are taking action as part of ISAF in eastern Afghanistan. Romania has 956 troops in Afghanistan, 899 of whom are carrying out missions as part of ISAF.
