8 aprilie 2009
The earthquake surviving Romanians in the Abruzzo region who want to come back to Romania but lost their identity cards and other documents under the rubble benefit by free consular assistance from Romania's Embassy in Rome, Ambassador Razvan Rusu told.
The earthquake surviving Romanians in the area who want to leave for Romania immediately can be given travel titles in the very earthquake-hit area by a team of Romanian consuls and diplomats who went to L'Aquila on Tuesday and are to be there on Wednesday (April 8) too and in the days to come.
The permanently working crisis cell that is made up of several diplomats and consuls at Romania's Embassy also mobilized to support those Romanians in L'Aquila and the surrounding places who have to come to Rome to take the bus or the plane to Romania.
They found them some accommodation at convenient prices, 30 euros a night, in hotels and got them some low-cost bus fares.
The survivors who have no money were given the possibility to make a loan to be paid back within 60 days from the consular emergency fund.
'There are very many Romanians whose houses are affected by the earthquake who nevertheless told the employees sent to the area that they preferred to stay in the area where the Italian authorities offered them good humanitarian assistance,' said Ambassador Razvan Rusu.
The crisis cell was spontaneously set up very early in the morning on Monday, April 6, when there was the first information of the seriousness of the earthquake in the Abruzzo region, its main aim being to ensure assistance and information for the Romanian citizens by using the emergency telephone number 0039 345 230 24 89 as well as to identify the victims with Romanian citizenship.
'There were calls from Romania made by the parents of some Romanians living in Italy, who did not know exactly the address or the place where they lived, but were very worried as they did not manage to contact them. We had to communicate with all these people, to keep in touch with them but in the end it was all right that most of these alarms were not confirmed,' explains the Romanian Ambassador.
'The Italian authorities mobilized excellently, being very open to cooperation, in offering the necessary information and assistance. The difficulty in the first hours after the earthquake was unavoidable considering the huge damage and the emergency situation,' said Ambassador Rusu.
The Romanian Orthodox Eparchy in Italy came to support the Romanian survivors and initiated a collection among the Romanian parishes in the peninsula and sent 3,000 litres of drinking water to the earthquake-his area.
