The UDMR parliamentarian on Monday proposed that the punishment be reduced, arguing that the one stipulated is much too harsh when compared to the sentences stipulated for the other crimes. 'This article (of the Penal Code – editor's note) speaks of euthanasia.
There are countries in which it is de-criminated. Obviously, such a thing is not possible here, for various reasons. All churches reject this idea and its definition is pretty tight. We are speaking here of helping a person to be released of suffering, after having repeatedly and consciously asked for it. I think the sentences for this deed are much too harsh compared to the others', Arpad said.
Social Democrat chairman of the Senate's Legal Commission Toni Grebla during Monday's debates on the Penal Code called for abandoning the article relating the killing at the victim's request. According to him, the adoption of the article might 'send a message that the public might find difficult to understand', even though the article text also contains the punishment for such an act.
'In my opinion, such a text is unacceptable… This would amount to a crime committed out of mercy. Nobody has the right to decide when to take a person's life out of mercy', Grebla stressed. Other MPs argued that if such a deed is not regulated, then it will be deemed first degree murder, which carries a sentence of 15 to 25 years in prison.
