Loading ...President Traian Basescu said on Wednesday in a news conference held in Beirut together with Lebanese counterpart Michel Sleiman, that the United States should play an important role in solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
'The implementation of those agreed upon over the past 7 years is essential for the stabilization of the Middle East. According to us, the expiry limit of the agreements' credibility has started to come to an end and if they do not materialize by the sides' will, we risk to reach the conclusion that the adopted solutions were not workable,' said Traian Basescu.
In this respect, Basescu stressed that the EU and the United States have major roles in this process. 'The European Union has an important role, but solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should have the United States as partner.
From Romania's viewpoint, we'll endorse on one side the observance of Palestine's right to self-determination, Israeli's right to security, the EU obligation of being a reliable mediator and the United States' right to being participant and guarantor of enforcement of the issues agreed upon seven years ago, said Basescu.
For his part, Michel Sleiman said that at the bilateral meeting he insisted upon Romania's importance in its capacity of EU member state to support the obtaining of a solution in the Middle East in line with the spirit of justice and Lebanon's interest.
He said Israel has to use the opportunity of the peace initiative in oreder to make steps to the peace restoration.
