Orban: EC is scrutinising the visa requirements for Romanians travelling to Moldova
15 aprilie 2009
The European Commission is currently scrutinising the introduction by the Republic of Moldova of visa requirements for Romanian nationals traveling to Moldova , European Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban said on Wednesday. He mentioned that the assessment of the European Commission also aims to detect how the Commission may react at this issue, given that negotiations with Moldova over the facilitation of visa requirements are still at an early stage.
'This will be an assessment ahead of the launching of the eastern partnership early this May. The visa requirements and the latest developments in Moldova are currently being scrutinised by various European institutions and we have to wait and see what their conclusions are.
As I announced some days ago, the European Commission and other European institutions started tackling this issue and the European Parliament is expected to react at the latest developments in Moldova in the days ahead, maybe even today,' Orban said at the end of a meeting in Bucharest with head of Romania's Department for European Affairs Vasile Puscas.
Orban also said that there is no talk of positive or negative signals or about supporting or not the demarches of the Romanian authorities, because Romania is a member state of the European Union and solidarity works within the European Union.
'What is being actually discussed, in legal and juridical terms, is the ways of action at the level of the European institutions. Some institutions, for instance the European Parliament, may pass political positions, for instance in the shape of resolutions. Other institutions, such as the European Commission, is judging things in juridical and legal terms and say to what extent agreements are infringed,' said Orban.
Puscas said that besides some statements by Romanian dignitaries, the conversation with Orban tackled the timeliness and support for the development of the EU's eastern policy. 'We agreed that Romania has the resources and interest to develop this initiative jointly with other EU member states and the European Commission, to the best of its abilities,' said Puscas.
