Senate Chairman Geoana, NGO officials pleading for debates on judicial codes

Information in English

Senate Chairman Mircea  Geoana  on Wednesday met officials  of  the  Romanian  Press  Club,  parliamentarians  of  the  judicial  committees  and  nogovernmental organisation officials – gathered in 'Stop the Codes!' alliance – to discuss the timeliness of debating the four judicial codes before their passage in Parliament.

Geoana argued that May 15, the deadline circulated for the passage of the four judicial codes in Parliament, is unrealistic and impossible to meet in practical terms, and pleaded for real debates on the codes with civil society officials.
'These codes were  approved more  than  100 years  ago and along time  they have  been subjected to changes in the Constitution and to various other transformations.

I believe the hasty approval of these four codes is highly damaging to the society, and there should be a healthy debate on them. I salute your presence, because a sound discussion of this issue is absolutely obligatory,' said Geoana.
He invited the attendees to take part in a new round of talks on the four judicial codes and the next steps to be taken in their relation.

Chairman of the Romanian Press Club Indira Crasnea pointed out that the 'Stop the Codes!' NGO alliance is not just another gathering of NGOs, as it is many times labelled in the public sphere, but a real alliance of civic organisations and mass media that emerged exactly out of the worries over the judicial infrastructure.

She also commended the parliamentarians on the code sub-committees, but said debates on the codes are necessary to the society. Crasnea also said political wish, will and decision make up a successful recipe for the adoption of the four judicial codes.

'Stop the Codes!' official Georgiana Iorgulescu emphasised that the member NGOs do not want to overlap Parliament or undermine the authority of Parliament, but they want legal proceedings for debates on the four codes and their returning to initiators.
